We see it on the news every day: Opioid addiction is a major crisis in this country, and the National Institute on Drug Abuse reports that 155 people die in the U.S. every day due to an opioid overdose. Most people assume these people are young people, troubled by their problems and that they get the drugs from drug dealers but that is not the case. Prescription drugs are involved in over 60% of fatalities. Nationwide the number of senior overdoses is significant, some intentional and some unintentional.
A note about Fentanyl: The pain-killing drug Fentanyl is so powerful and potentially lethal that many doctors refuse to prescribe it. It has the potential to kill a human being with one dose if a mistake is made ingesting the wrong amount. If you know someone who is taking Fentanyl it would be prudent to very carefully monitor the situation to make sure the proper dosage is being taken.
It is normal for any mature patient to have aches and pains, but the use of powerful painkillers should only be considered after all other alternatives have been attempted. Seniors who are even slightly confused about the amount of medicine they are supposed to take and the frequency should have help. We always recommend people take time to speak with doctors and pharmacists to make sure they are perfectly clear about what medicines they are taking and the directions.
Pain Management
Rather than take a pill every time a pain flares up, it’s a good idea to speak with a physician about alternative methods to relieve discomfort. Sometimes a hot bath or heating pad can ease symptoms of arthritis or muscular pain. Regular exercise has been proven to ease pain by strengthening the body, and fresh air alone is a great therapy.
Senior Care
If you have a loved one who is advanced in age and has difficulty understanding the medications and related directions it is important they have help. They may not require in-home care but perhaps just a visit from someone who is trained to explain proper procedures will be sufficient. Everyone has questions, and we have answers.
