There’s a reason television earned the name “the boob tube” long ago. Most of the programming is not known for challenging one’s brain or for stimulating creativity. As people age, they need mental stimulation to retain cognitive function, and staring at the boob tube won’t suffice.

Aging experts recommend activities like crossword puzzles, word games, arts & crafts, wood working, playing a musical instrument, and other “hands-on” projects, hobbies, and avocations that take imagination. Studies show there is a real boost in memory and alertness when seniors get involved in long-term activities where they can work for a time one day and continue the next. Jigsaw puzzles are also great to work on, especially if there is another person involved.

And speaking of another person, the number one cause of mental and physical deterioration among elder citizens is being alone. Loneliness. Socialization is very important for everyone, not just seniors. With seniors, however, it’s more critical. If you have a loved one who lives alone and is alone most of the time, do what you can to encourage socialization with friends, neighbors, or anyone who can help with some companionship.

We are very pleased that we have capable individuals who can provide companionship to people who need it. Our services include registered nurses, home health aides, and companions who can help with everything from laundry and housework to just being there as a friend.
