If you have a friend or relative living far away and they are home-bound, you look forward to speaking with them on the phone to make sure they’re ok. Even better is a video chat online, so you can see how they are doing. Unfortunately you can’t be there all the time, and one thing people fear is a call from the Emergency Room because something went wrong.
Unfortunately many elderly patients, after being released from the Emergency Room or hospital go home and do not get better. Injuries from falls, especially don’t heal well in seniors as well as younger people, and so the key is to prevent the visit to the ER in the first place.
For elderly, home-bound people, one of the most common reasons for visits to the Emergency Room is falling down.
People fall down the stairs or in the bathroom so it’s very important to have safety rails installed anywhere there is a danger of tripping or slipping.
Another common reason for ER visits is pneumonia. It’s important to note that only 69% of those over age 65 have received a pneumonia shot. Once an elderly person has pneumonia it is very hard to cure it.
Drug interactions and mistakes with medication dosages are common reasons people get ill and must be hospitalized. Having someone help with taking prescriptions at the right time and on the right days is very helpful. Monitoring blood pressure before something serious happens is also very important.
