Oral Care for Seniors

When people age, they usually develop health conditions which must be monitored by a physician and treated, often at home with medication and/or other therapies. Elderly men and women often live comfortably with high blood pressure, arthritis, glaucoma, and other ailments and they focus most of their attention on managing them as long as they follow doctor’s orders.

Many people seem to place a great deal of attention on dental health when they are young but gradually lose focus as they age. Some seniors tend to ease off on oral health as time goes on, perhaps because their teeth don’t have that bright white shine they did when they were younger. This is not wise.

In fact, good oral health is essential to everyone, especially seniors. Research has shown there is a link between gum disease and heart disease. Infections in the mouth and gums, when not treated, can spread to the rest of the body and cause serious damage. Heart disease, diabetes, and pneumonia have been linked directly to poor oral care.

Regular brushing, flossing, rinsing with a mouthwash, and of course visiting the dentist is critical for everyone, especially seniors.
