West Palm Beach Home Health Care

It’s probably not a coincidence that the acronym for Seasonal Affective Disorder is SAD. Seasonal Affective Disorder is a form of depression that cycles with the seasons. It can occur during any time of the year, but it typically affects people during the winter months. Many people, especially those in their later years are not happy and joyous during and after the holiday season.

The weather in Florida is not as gloomy and cold as it is up north, but SAD is still a very real condition, and it can cause people to lose their otherwise bright outlook on life. The days are shorter and their is a lot of stress associated with holiday preparations.

Signs of SAD include a loss of energy, changes in appetite and sleeping habits, irritability, and loss of interest in socializing and other activities. It is important to watch for signs of SAD and have a plan to help the individual affected.

What can be done about Seasonal Affective Disorder?

Believe it or not, a proactive diet can help. When a person gets less sunlight due to shorter days, they may need a boost of Vitamin D. A blood test can see if there is a deficiency, and a supplement might help.

Brighter lights help. If you know someone who seems seasonally depressed it’s a good idea to make sure their living areas are well-lit. A dark environment can cause people to feel down.

Activities are important. Try to arrange things to do outside the home as often as possible. Cooking meals, playing board games, going to the movies, and shopping are all great  things to make the day brighter and better.

See a doctor. If other things don’t work, there are medications that can help people cope with depression.
