Nursing Home or Home Health Care

The year 2020 has been one that most people won’t want to go through again, and we can only hope 2021 is brighter and with less things to worry about.

One of the dilemmas many people have to confront is the question of how to care for family members and other loved ones when they reach their golden years and need help. Usually it is a matter of deciding what environment is best for their needs, what situation will bring them the most happiness and fulfillment, and what is within the budget of those making the decisions and paying the bills.

The first nursing homes in America were established in the early 19th century and were often associated with churches or other religious organizations. Older people felt comfortable living with others who shared the same ideas and perspective on life.

Through the years large corporations began to invest in building and operating nursing homes and residential facilities with varying levels of care and it is a multi-billion dollar business. While there are some residential facilities with poor reputations, most are adequate and many are provide exceptional care.

Everything changed in March of 2020. The Covid-19 crisis had an impact on all elder-care facilities because the virus spread rapidly and seniors are particularly at risk of having serious complications from the virus. People panicked, and many residents died.

The future is uncertain, and people who must choose between a nursing home or keeping their elderly family members or friends home are in a quandary. Can nursing homes be trusted? Will home health care be needed? What about the costs?
