When the Covid-19 pandemic started there was massive news coverage of the strain placed on hospitals. Rooms and Intensive Care Units were flooded with sick, contagious people, and health care workers were working long and exhausting shifts trying to keep up with the work that had to done in order to save lives. There was also a critical shortage of medical equipment, especially ventilators, which kept people breathing when their lungs were unable to do so.
While Home Health Care has traditionally been viewed as “after-care” or for rehabilitation, or only for senior-aged patients, it adapted to care for some Covid patients who were not in need of an ICU and could receive their treatment at home. This allowed many more patients to receive quality care and monitoring and it eased some of the stress on hospitals.
Patients receiving in-home care are regularly tested for Covid-19 and watched closely in case any symptoms develop. The sooner a patient is identified as needing stepped-up care the better.
One of the major benefits of home health care is that most patients see the same health care professional on a regular basis. Rather than rotating many different nurses and aides, there is usually someone very familiar with the patient and their routines.
