Hippocrates of Kos (460 – c. 370 BC), also known as Hippocrates II, was a Greek physician of the classical period who is considered one of the most outstanding figures in the history of medicine. There are many profound quotes attributed to Hippocrates, including:
- Cure sometimes, treat often, comfort always.
- Science is the father of knowledge, but opinion breeds ignorance.
- Whenever a doctor cannot do good, he must be kept from doing harm.
Another Hippocrates quote that people refer to often is “Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food” which doctors and nutritionists know is very true. Processed foods and meals loaded with salt and fat are very detrimental to anyone who wants to live a long and healthy life.
Modern medicine has advanced significantly in part because of drugs developed to treat diseases and lessen pain but all the drugs in the world can’t keep someone well if they persistently eat unhealthy foods.
While our loved ones may need fewer calories as they age, they specifically need more B vitamins, calcium, protein, and hydration. As we
age, our ability to absorb nutrients decreases.
Additionally, your senior may have varied nutritional requirements to help with medications or supplements they may be taking. It may be valuable to connect with a nutritionist to help guide food and nutrition choices.
